Medical Cannabis Pharmacies in the UK — How Dispensing Works

Medical cannabis prescriptions in the UK are dispensed by Home Office-licensed specialist pharmacies — not your local chemist. Here is how the dispensing process works.

One of the most common points of confusion for new patients is where to collect their prescription. Unlike standard NHS prescriptions, medical cannabis cannot be dispensed by a general pharmacy such as Boots or Lloyds. A specialist licensing regime applies, and only a small number of pharmacies across the UK are authorised to handle Schedule 2 cannabis-based medicinal products. This guide explains how the dispensing system works, who the main licensed pharmacies are, and what you need to know as a patient.

Home Office Schedule 2 Licensing

Cannabis-based medicinal products in the UK are classified as Schedule 2 controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. Handling Schedule 2 drugs — including receiving, storing, dispensing and recording transactions — requires a specific licence from the Home Office.

Standard community pharmacies (including large chains such as Boots, Lloyds Pharmacy, Superdrug, and independent high street chemists) are typically licensed only to handle Schedule 3, 4 and 5 controlled drugs in the course of normal dispensing. Most do not hold a Schedule 2 licence for cannabis-based products, and even those that technically hold a licence for other Schedule 2 drugs (such as morphine) are typically not set up for the specific product range, cold chain requirements, and documentation demands of medical cannabis dispensing.

For this reason, a prescription from a UK medical cannabis clinic must be sent to one of the specialist pharmacies that hold the appropriate authorisation. Your clinic will typically manage this transfer electronically through their own platform or portal — you will not be asked to hand in a paper prescription at a high street counter.

The Main Licensed UK Specialist Pharmacies

A number of pharmacies have built dedicated medical cannabis dispensing operations. The best-established include:

  • BSPG Pharma (Bedrocan UK): One of the leading specialist dispensaries in the UK, BSPG Pharma handles a large proportion of UK medical cannabis prescriptions. It holds Home Office Schedule 2 authorisation and operates a postal delivery service to all UK addresses.
  • Grow Pharma: A dedicated medical cannabis pharmacy, Grow Pharma is a significant UK dispensing partner for multiple clinics and product producers. It delivers UK-wide.
  • Dispensary Green: An established specialist pharmacy with a focus on patient service and a wide product range. Dispensary Green operates exclusively in the medical cannabis space and delivers UK-wide.
  • Stack Pharma: Another licensed specialist pharmacy, Stack Pharma works with a number of UK clinics and maintains a range of cannabis-based products for dispensing.

Patients do not typically choose their pharmacy directly — your clinic will have preferred pharmacy partners, and your prescription will be routed accordingly. If you have a preference, you can ask your clinic at the time of booking whether they work with a specific pharmacy.

How the Prescription Reaches the Pharmacy

UK medical cannabis prescriptions are issued as FP10(MDA) controlled drug prescriptions (or equivalent private prescriptions). The process works as follows:

  1. Your clinician issues the prescription through the clinic's digital platform at the end of your consultation
  2. The prescription is transmitted electronically to the partner pharmacy, or you may be sent a secure link to choose from available pharmacies
  3. The pharmacy receives and validates the prescription, confirms stock availability, and contacts you to arrange payment for the medication
  4. Once payment is confirmed, the pharmacy prepares your order and dispatches it by secure post

You do not need to present a physical prescription anywhere. The entire process is handled digitally and by post.

Delivery: What to Expect

Medical cannabis medication is delivered in sealed, discreet packaging with no external indication of the contents. Standard delivery from a specialist pharmacy typically takes 2–5 working days from prescription issue, though this can vary with stock availability and postal timelines.

Deliveries are made to your registered address. If you will be temporarily away, contact your pharmacy in advance to arrange delivery to an alternative address — most can accommodate this with reasonable notice. Delivery is available to all UK postcodes including Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

Plan your reorders with enough lead time to avoid running out. Most pharmacies recommend placing your next order 5–7 working days before your current supply ends. Some clinics and pharmacies offer auto-renewal options once your prescription is established.

Storage at Home

As Schedule 2 controlled drugs, medical cannabis products should be stored correctly and responsibly:

  • Temperature: Most products should be stored in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Flower products are typically best stored below 25°C; oils may have specific temperature recommendations on the label.
  • Child safety: Products must be kept out of reach of children. Use the childproof packaging provided, and consider a lockable storage container — particularly if children are present in the household.
  • Away from others: As a controlled drug, your medication is prescribed to you specifically. It should not be shared, sold, or transferred to any other person. Doing so is a criminal offence.
  • Expiry: Follow the expiry dates on your medication. Do not use expired product.

What to Do If Your Prescription Is Lost or Stolen

  • Report it to the police and obtain a crime reference number — this is strongly recommended as it creates a formal record
  • Notify your clinic as soon as possible, providing the crime reference number if the medication was stolen
  • The clinic can issue a replacement prescription at their discretion; this is assessed on a case-by-case basis and replacement prescriptions for controlled drugs are not automatic
  • Clinics may require a GP letter or statutory declaration in some circumstances

Costs: Medication vs Consultation

Your clinic charges for consultations and clinical oversight; your pharmacy charges for the medication itself and any dispensing fees. These are separate bills paid to separate organisations.

  • Medication cost: typically £100–£400 per month depending on product, formulation and prescribed dose
  • Dispensing fees: some pharmacies charge a dispensing fee (typically £5–£15); others include this within the product price — confirm with your pharmacy
  • Delivery charges: many pharmacies include standard delivery within the product cost; express options, where available, may carry additional charges
