Who can access medical cannabis?

UK specialists can prescribe for a wide range of conditions where standard treatments have not been effective.

This is not an exhaustive list. Eligibility is determined by a specialist on a case-by-case basis. You must have tried at least two conventional treatments first.

Do you qualify for a prescription?

You are likely eligible if all of the following apply to you.

You are a UK resident

Medical cannabis prescriptions in the UK are only available to patients registered with a UK address and, where required, a UK GP.

You have a qualifying condition

Your condition must be one that a specialist doctor can legally prescribe cannabis-based products for, such as chronic pain, PTSD, MS or epilepsy.

Previous treatments have not worked

You must have tried at least two conventional treatments (medication, therapy or both) that were either ineffective or caused unacceptable side effects.

You have medical records available

The prescribing specialist will need access to your recent medical history to confirm your diagnosis and previous treatment attempts.

Common questions about medical cannabis in the UK

Yes. Since November 2018, cannabis-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs) have been legal in the UK under Schedule 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. They can only be prescribed by a specialist doctor on the General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register.
NHS prescriptions are extremely rare — only a handful have ever been issued, mostly for severe childhood epilepsy. The vast majority of UK patients access medical cannabis privately through licensed clinics at their own cost.
Common qualifying conditions include chronic pain, PTSD, multiple sclerosis, anxiety disorders, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, Tourette syndrome, and cancer-related symptoms. There is no definitive list — eligibility is determined by a specialist based on your individual circumstances and treatment history.
Initial consultations cost between £49 and £150 depending on the clinic. Monthly ongoing prescription costs typically range from £100 to £400, depending on product type, dosage, and form (flower, oil, capsule). Some clinics offer subscription or membership pricing to reduce ongoing costs.
Most patients can book an initial consultation within 24–72 hours of registering with a clinic. If prescribed, the pharmacy typically dispatches your medication within 2–5 working days. From first contact to first delivery, the total process usually takes under two weeks.
CBD (cannabidiol) products sold legally in UK shops contain no more than 1mg of THC and do not require a prescription. Medical cannabis refers to prescription-only products that may contain significant levels of THC and/or CBD and are dispensed by a licensed pharmacy. They are regulated medicines — not supplements.
Clinics will typically request your GP records and, following a prescription, send a clinical letter to your GP for your medical record. GP cooperation is not required for a private prescription, but informing your GP is recommended for continuity of care.
UK drug-driving law has a zero-tolerance threshold for THC — 2 micrograms per litre of blood. Even prescribed medical cannabis can result in a positive roadside test. You must not drive if your ability to do so is impaired. Discuss driving with your prescribing specialist before starting treatment.
